How to install a BMW downpipe: a step-by-step overview

Fitting a downpipe is well within reach for a confident home mechanic — most owners have it done in an afternoon. Here's the overview so you know exactly what you're getting into before the car goes up on ramps.
What you'll need
- A socket set, ratchet and extensions
- An O2-sensor socket
- Penetrating oil
- Jack and stands, or ramps / a lift
- Optional: anti-seize and a torque wrench
The steps
- Cool down & raise the car. Let the exhaust cool completely, then raise and support the car safely.
- Free the sensors & hardware. Soak the O2 sensors and fasteners with penetrating oil, then unplug and remove the sensors.
- Remove the OEM downpipe. Undo the turbo-side flange and the connection to the mid-pipe, then drop the factory pipe out.
- Fit the OKTAN downpipe. Transfer your O2 sensors, offer the pipe up to the OEM mounting points, and start every bolt by hand.
- Seat & torque. Tighten the V-band clamp evenly to seat the flange, then torque everything to spec.
- Tune if catless. Reconnect sensors, lower the car, and run a supporting tune to manage fuel trims and the CEL on catless setups.
Difficulty & time
