How to install a BMW N20 / N26 downpipe: step-by-step

Fitting a downpipe is one of the most satisfying bolt-ons you can do in your own garage. This is the BMW N20 / N26 walkthrough — the same steps our team uses, with the details that are specific to your engine. Every OKTAN order is fitment-confirmed before it ships, and if you get stuck we'll walk you through it.
The N20 (and California-market N26) is a single-turbo 2.0. It's one of the easier downpipes to fit thanks to good access. The N26 is the SULEV variant — mechanically the pipe is the same, but keep emissions rules in mind if your car is an N26.
What you'll need
- Time: 2–4 hours (intermediate DIY)
- Metric socket set & ratchet, extensions and a swivel/universal joint
- E-Torx (external Torx) sockets for the exhaust fasteners, plus an O2-sensor socket
- Penetrating oil, anti-seize, a torque wrench and new clamps/gaskets if supplied
- A safe way to raise and support the car — ramps or jack + axle stands
Before you start
- Let the exhaust cool completely. Downpipes sit right at the turbo — never work on a hot system.
- Raise and support the car securely on stands or ramps on level ground, and chock the wheels.
- Disconnect the battery negative terminal if you're comfortable doing so, and soak every exhaust fastener and O2 sensor in penetrating oil.
Step by step
- Remove the undertray / heat shields for access to the downpipe and the turbo outlet flange.
- Unplug and remove the O2 sensors before you drop the pipe — it's far easier with the pipe still in the car, and it protects the sensor tips. Label them so they go back in the same positions.
- Undo the turbo-side V-band or flange and the rear connection to the mid-pipe. Support the downpipe as you free the last fastener.
- Lower the OEM downpipe out of the car. Compare it side-by-side with your OKTAN downpipe to confirm sensor bungs and flange orientation match before fitting.
- Transfer the O2 sensors into the new downpipe — a dab of anti-seize on the threads, and torque to spec. OEM sensor positions are retained.
- Offer up the new downpipe, start every bolt/clamp by hand, then seat the flange squarely. Tighten the V-band evenly so it pulls up concentric.
- Torque everything to spec, refit the heat shields and undertray, reconnect the sensors and the battery.
- Start the car and check for leaks and rattles with the car still raised. A faint smell/smoke on first start is just assembly oil burning off.
Tune, CEL & break-in
A catless configuration removes the catalyst the car monitors, so it will usually trigger a check-engine light unless you run a supporting tune that manages the rear O2 check — and a tune is what realises the airflow gains anyway. A 200-cell high-flow cat is far more likely to stay code-free on a tune. Re-check your clamps after the first few heat cycles.
