BMW N55 downpipe guide: fitment, gains and how it differs from the N54

The N55 replaced the twin-turbo N54 with a single twin-scroll turbo — simpler, reliable and very responsive to a freer exhaust. A downpipe is the classic first bolt-on.

N55 vs N54: one turbo instead of two

Where the N54 uses two turbos (and therefore two downpipes), the N55 runs a single turbo and takes a single downpipe. If you're cross-shopping guides, make sure you're reading the right one — the parts are not interchangeable.

What the downpipe does

The factory unit crams a restrictive catalyst right at the turbo outlet. Replacing it lowers back-pressure for quicker spool, a deeper note and real headroom once you add a tune.

Catless vs 200-cell

Catless flows best and sounds hardest, but is off-road / competition use only and usually needs a tune to clear the CEL. A 200-cell high-flow cat keeps it street-friendly while still flowing far better than stock.

What fits

Our N55 downpipe covers the M135i, M235i, M2 (F87), 335i, 435i and X5/X6 35i across the F-chassis, RWD and xDrive. It's a true bolt-on to the OEM mounting points.
