N20 vs N26: What's the difference, and does it matter for your downpipe?

If you've searched for a downpipe for your 2.0-litre turbo BMW, you've probably seen it listed for both the N20 and the N26. Are they different engines? Short answer: no — and it matters less than you think.
N20 and N26 are the same engine
The N26 is the SULEV (Super Ultra-Low Emissions Vehicle) version of the N20, fitted to cars sold in California-emissions states. Mechanically the block, turbo, head and exhaust flange are identical. The N26 simply carries extra emissions equipment to meet the stricter standard. From the turbo outlet back — the part a downpipe replaces — they're the same.
Does it change the downpipe?
No. A downpipe bolts to the OEM mounting points shared by both engines, so a single N20 / N26 downpipe fits either. The only real choice is catless (maximum flow, off-road use only) or a 200-cell high-flow catalyst for a cleaner, more street-friendly setup.
